WWW-

  • The feedback we got from this is that the concept of our idea is good
  • Interviews are good.

EBI-
  • The sound needs fixing Voice overs
  • The interviews need to be edited so that only the important points are shown
  • Add more visuals
  • The statistics part is way too long and it needs to be shorter
  • More co-ordinating visuals
  • Overall a lot of work is needed on this.

Thinking of changes for 2nd Draft

  • There are a few changes that we are planning to take action on for our second draft of our documentary. This is essential as we realize the mistakes we are making already.
  • Today we added the music to what we have edited so far, and what we intend to do here is:
  • Change the mouth part to 4 people facing each other and saying the slang words and then the Standard English word, mimicking a confrontation scene.
  • What we need to consider if we do this- Originially we decided to use a song called Pass out by Tiny Temper, however the feedback we got from this was that it was too distracting.
  • So Tobore and I were trying to think of songs that we could use, for each song we are only going to use the first 30 - 40 secs of a song.

These were the songs we were thinking of using for our documentary.
- Eliza Doolitle Pack Up

- Katy B on a mission-Katy B

-Opsy Daisy by chipmunk

This is the closest I can find to an instrumental the first 25 secs of this we weould have used.

- Never Leave You - Tinchy Stryder.

In the end we came up with a whole new song called - I need air" By magnetic man The only problem with using this is that the the editing will have to match the tempo of this song as it is very upbeat.

To be on the safe side I am downloading the instrumentals for Opsy Daisy and Never leave you as we are still taking these two as options.

An idea:
we can use this instrumental at the end of our documentary.

Editing from our 1st draft

  • Today the group refilmed Mr. Foley's interview and this time we made sure that there was a different setting and location as it will convince the audience of the setting; making the interview more natural as opposed to staged.

  • We also filmed the introduction part with the presenter in the library and the dictionary part.

  • We have made another change to the script: we have taken out "dutty" as it is irrelevant.

  • Mistakes we realized: The dictionary part, The dictionary we used as a prop was too big and it was also heavy and it made the camera jump when we put it on the table. We filmed this many times and still found the same problem in each clip we watched on iMovie.
  • Music: While Victoria and Mariana and I were editing Tobore downloaded the music that we intended to use. He did this so that we can then transfer it to iTunes and then import it into garage band.

Premiere Pro Tutorial..

To advance our production skills we have been introduced to Premiere Pro. This is an updated version of iMovie, which will allow us to use green sceen and split screens.

  • So to help me I have done some research on you tube to help me get an idea as how to use the programme.

Editing what we have so far

In today's lesson what we did was we edited what we had filmed and we filmed Mr. Foley's part for our documentary.

Here are a few pictures from our first draft of documentary; and these are the parts that we need to also refilm.

Our 1st Draft

The first draft of our documentary is due on the 17th of December.

Yesterday we started to edit our work in the lesson and we got feedback from Ms on what needs to be changes and re filmed.

Feedback

After we had shown our teacher the clips that we had this was the feedback that we got:

  • Adding case Studies
  • Re film the introductory section as, it needs to be less "Staged"
  • Start on Music Bulleted List
  • Composition when filming interview and public interview
  • Lighting- as in the beginning we filmed the mouths in different places
  • Questions that are asked need to be consistent and not varied or changed
  • Visual effect- we were advised to think about something that would interest the audience, this can be done by using still images.
  • Extreme close ups- try to avoid this
  • Incorporate match on action into intro to make it more interesting.
Changes we need to make-
  • The script- On the first section, we have decided to change one of our slang words.
  • My part (Introduction to the documentary) We need to film in a different Location.

What needs to be re filmed-

  • Mr. Foley's part- as the composition needs to be improved
  • Mouths in the introduction
  • Our public interviews- as there were too many different shots and some people we moving around too much making it hard for us to film.
  • My part- as we filmed it inside- we could use a different location
What we learnt from this.!
As a group what we decided to do was w to make a video of us saying what we have learnt from the feedback that we got from Ms. This is to help us in our evaluation, as we have acknowledged what needs to be changed improved and re filmed in order to make our documentary successful.

Research on Double page spreads and magazines

To help us with our Ancillaries we had to do a task of research our double page spreads and adverts in magazines and newspapers

This was my first draft. The feedback I got from this was that I used a lot of photographic magazines instead of using magazines that would allow me to annotate what I learnt from it.

Institution

After looking at various documentaries we believe that our documentary will be best classified as a BBC Three documentary. This is due to the target audiene that we are aiming at.

BBC three also tends to show:
Entertaining documentaries
Factual documentaries

This is precisely the purpose of our documentary.

When I compared my findings to BBC one Channel 4 and Sky documentaries. What i noticed about these documentaries was that they were either critical or serious topics that are related to world related issues. E.g Channel 4- Extraordinary people.

Channel 4- Extraordinary People.

BBC One Documentary-

BBC Three documentaries-

Documentaries like these are mainly targeted at a young audience, hence the reason why we decided that BBC three as an institution would be suitable.

Script, Storyboard and Shotlist

3rd Draft of Script (introduction)

At this stage as we are still forming and putting together our ideas, I have only decided to focus on the opening of our documentary.

What i also realized was that my previous formats of the scripts were structured incorrectly.

Wait Till Your Teacher Gets Home- Documentary

This is a documentary that was shown on BBC Three.
Broadcasted at: 2.40 am
On: 5th of November.
Duration: 60 minutes
Category: Family and Relationships

The Link:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00vl3zc/Wait_Till_Your_Teacher_Gets_Home!/#recommendSource=tv_episode_page

To help me get more ideas and understanding about documentaries watching the first 5 minutes were crucial for me. And whilst doing so I gained a lot of knowledge and also came across different filming and editing techniques in the introduction of the documentary.

  • The beginning of this documentary starts off with a long shot of school children walking- alongside non-diagetic rock music.

  • There is then a low angle shot of the school's name plaque as well as an establishing shot of the school; with the diagetic sound of the school bell. This is important as already within the first two seconds of this documentary with the inclusion of two differnt shots the location has already been set clear to the viewer.

  • There is then a mid shot of the school pupils during the school day, going to lessons. This again sets the scene and lets the audience know the main theme or location as to where this episode is set.

The director introduces the main character through a mid shot of her arguing with two people at this stage we do not know who they are.

at 0.19 seconds the voice over starts. Which formally introduces the main character of the documentary.

Structure of the Interviews.

The structure of this interview was also something that we already decided to incorporate into our own documentary. The way in which this interview was structured was that the teacher directly answered questions to the camera. As the viewers we cannot hear the questions being asked but when listening to the answer giving it is clear as to what he may have been asked.

Voiceovers

The type of voice overs used in this documentary was extremely effective as, we see "Loretta" showing lack of work in the classroom while the teacher's voice over says exactly this. This is effective as it allows the viewers to picture and see what the teacher is saying at the same time co-ordinating images with visuals

Then from the teacher's interview being a voice over it then switches to where she is talking directly to the camera. This editing technique is effective as it keeps the audiences attention.

This is displayed in the print screen shots below.
(Where the voiceover begins)

(Where the interview then switches to the actual teacher talking)

Overall from this documentary I have learnt a lot of things that I would like to include in our documentary. This includes:

  • A different technique to voiceovers
  • Showing clips from the actual documentary in the first few seconds allowing the viewers to see what the documentary include.

My Script 2nd Draft

CONVENT OF JESUS AND MARY. Exterior. Day

Jamilla’s walking down the steps of the garden as she introduces the programme.

Jamilla

Hello and welcome to JMTV, my name is Jamilla Joseph and today’s documentary will focus on the ultimate national use of SLANG within education.

Today’s episode will focus on the use of informal language used in the classrooms. Slang has always been used in the English language but most people see slang as abbreviations. E.g. Computerà PC. However now slang has evolved into a whole new era and it’s now popularly used amongst teenagers.

Our 1st Day of filming

Today was our first offical step to filming our A2 production. Myself Tobore, Mariana and Victoria all went down to Trafalgar Square and Carnaby Street as this is the beginning of the documentary, and also at doing a couple interviews.
(The two photographers for that day. A smile to start a windy day= Staying positive)

( A shop that was labelled Sk:n --> instead of SKIN!

Our Roles

Whilst filming we all participated in using the camera, Mariana and I took photos, Tobore was the main director, Victoria filmed her part as the interviewer and I went out to look for interviewees that would be willing to answer our questions; explaining to them what our production was about.

Preparation for our first day of filming

So as tomorrow will be our first day of filming. As a group we are planning to start our documentary filming process by filming at Carnaby Street in Central London.
Here we intend to ask the public questions about their views and opinions about the topic of slang.

A Kick Start

To start things I came up with these four questions to ask the public and they are

1.) Is slang a Habit?
2.) Do you use slang in your everyday speech even in formal situations.? E.g. Innit
3.) Do you think the use of slang is due to technology or the influence of the media?
4.) What is your favourite slang word.

With these four questions I specifically trailed away from asking any questions school related as our population is more likely to be a range of people and the questions need to be the same. So to make our sample population equal the interviewees need to be treated the same and asked the same exact questions each time on approach.

This is just an Idea and it may not be final. I have asked about using these questions; tomorrow I will be able to find out if the group is OK with these questions or if they need changing.

Statistics and Research on Slang

Slanguage

This BBC news article is where the name "Slanguage" derived from. This newspaper article debating on Slang that was published on the 8th of December 2009

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8388545.stm

Here I have also found another article from the Guardian. Concerning a Descriptivist approach on the use of Slang. This is an atricle that goes against the introduction of a Slang dictionary. And this is something that we can look into and consider when looking at our Research and Statistics.

Published on: Friday 26th June 2006 ----> Already This is one of the key features I found interesting as this shows that the popularity on slang has been an issue for an ongoing period of time (2006). Only recently it has become more wide spread and a huge concern.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2006/jun/23/books.usa

It has been said that 87,000 slang words were put together in this Slang dictionary and this is just in America along; ommiting North Carolina.

This website embaraces the use of Slang and looks at it as part of a British Clulture; which could be looked at as a Prescriptivist approach meaning they belive that there is no need for change.

Here is another website containing British Slang words. In our documentary we could use this definition of the words that we use. As it reflects Standard English rather than us as a group simplifying what the word may mean.

THE OBSERVER NEWSPAPER

THE TELEGRAPH

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/3320069/Low-marks-for-pupils-who-use-soap-opera-slang-in-their-exams.html

(This newspaper aticle is titled--> Low marks for pupils who use soap opera slang in their exams) This was published on the 12th October 2003

I have highlighted statistics and important facts regarding slang " which is something that could be used in my documentary when including facts and statistics.

Our allocated Roles

To keep order within our group we then decided to allocate ourselves with roles, we did this to help us organise our filming strategy better.

Camera Operation- Is something that would be done by each member in the group; this must be done in order for each member to display their technical abilities and skills; this include operating the camera correctly and taking out learning skills a step further as A level students.

Costume and Props.

As one of the presenters for the documentary I have taken into consideration a Prop that I could use to fit in with with "Presenter theme" I have chosen a distinctive short trench coat as the main costume convention

Why do we talk Documentary.

In my English lesson we watched a documentary from the BBC abut why we talk.
What i found extremely interesting and gained knowledge from was the use of shots, and camera angles, and non-diagetic sound

This is part one.

  • Useful Tips from documentary: An idea was to have an extreme close-up of the lips when the people that we use in our documentary are saying slang words. This is the inspiration that we got this idea from.

  • Sound- The sound changes when there is a voiceover and the audience are questions. This is important to note as sound relays an important message in a documentary.

  • Why sound is needed: It draws the audiences attention back to the purpose of the documentary and the focus of what the documentary aims to investigate

At. 1.58 mins to 2.00 mins

Part 2

The first 15 seconds of this documentary is vital as it shows close-ups of lips as the interviewee says a word; the shot then cuts to fasts paste cuts of people talking.

This could be a feature done to keep the audience interested. This is something I would like to incorporate and discuss with my group as to something we could include in our documentary.

New Plan, shot list and storyboard

Today we got some feedback from the work that we done. This was to improve our storyboard and shot list as it was too simplistic. This was the work that we did and got the feedback on

Extra Research for Research and Planing

VIDEOS

Only the first 0.45 seconds of this video is important. It pointed out to me the directions where to look for theories which is that second task of my resrach.

Here is an example of a Chanel 4 news feed about the topic of slang

One of the main things i learnt from this is that there are different views about slang.
Here is a screen shot of a headteacher when she was being interviewed.

I thought that the interview technique that was used here was very effective as we had one individual say their point of few and the interviewee asked questions directly to the person. So this allows the audience to hear exactly what the interviewee has asked.

What I also likede was the fact that at the beginning of the clip there was reference to some of the factors that could contribute to the popularity of slang.

THEORIST:

William Labov- An American sociolinguist. He looked at the way in which people speak; and the different forms and ways that english comes across. He identifies the use of informal language and standard English.
