Writing a script for our Ancillary
Today we went through steps of how to address the question in our evaluation that links to our ancillaries. To help us with this my teacher went through steps as to what we could include when addressing that question. Theses were the following ideas that she asked us to consider

Second draft of Ancillary
- Draw up a mind map of all my episodes that my entire documentary will be based on.
- Then form this ruffly sketch how I would get my idea across quick and easily.
- This is because, my 1st draft of my Ancillary didn't really match the conventions of a newspaper advert.
- To help the construction of my double page spread and newspaper advert I also drew some thumbnails so that it would create a visual image in my mind as to what goes where on the page. I found this technique useful to some degree as it enabled me to know in my mind the structure of what my ancillary will look like.
- This was the mind map based on my documentary my teacher produced to help.

Composing 1st draft of Ancillary
Today I attempted to construct a first draft of our ancillary. To help me to this as mentioned before I used In design and Photoshop. As this is only my first draft not that much detail and relevance to my target audience has been incorporated into this piece.

Research&planning Ancillary 2nd Draft
Some of the tasks we were required to do today, replicates a task we were given to do back in November 2010. This was to get the class thinking about the research that we would have to do when it came to actually doing the ancillary.
On Slide 1: Talk about the organisation of the font, avoid using the words "I like" When I mention the affect of the spread. I need to explain why this is a good idea; also when I mentioned the effectiveness of the colours used on the double page spread, I was advised to be precise about the colors and say exactly what interested me about it.
On slide 2: I need to talk about the organisation of the text, and the way it is written, looking at the impact it has on the picture. The movement of the picture -> from the lady kicking -> to the kicking it -> then down to the text itself. This was a good example of a double page spread which my teacher thought was good, as it allowed her the see clearly what was being promoted.
On Slide 3: My teacher said this was not a double page spread so I need to find another example of a double page spread.
On Slide 4: My teacher advised me to put these forms and conventions into a table so that I can differentiate between the forms and the conventions, as this would allow me to know how to construct my own ancillary.
On Slide 5: I was advised to use less writing on this slide, and to put my ideas in bullet points, I need to say what I find effective -> talk about the design aspects -> consider the relation to the target audience.
On Slide 6: I was advised to put in more comments and again do the same thing as slide 5.

Starting our Ancillaries
In today's lesson we were given a task to start us off with our ancillaries. To help us design our ancillaries we are going to use Photoshop and Indesign.
- Find a double page spread from an A listing magazine, this must have some link to our documentary. (In today's lesson we discussed what an a listing magazine is:) It is a magazine that is produced every so often, that comes along with a newspaper.
- We have to research a completed double page spread.
- The size and the magazine that it needs to be put in
- Double page magazine spreads that we think our effective. (2/3 examples with annotations of what interested us)
- Double page magazine spreads from TV shows alongside 2/3 annotated examples.
- The forms and conventions of double page magazine spread
- How I am going to attract our target audience
- List the inspirations I got from my findings e.g. the layout/ style of font.
- Research on the newspaper I would want to advertise my documentary in
- The size and cost of adverts in newspapers
- The forms & conventions of newspaper adverts
- How I intend to attract my target audience
- What inspired me about the adverts e.g. Layout design, style of font/ photo manipulation.

Our final Documentary.

Continuing our evaluation
Today Mariana and I sat down and continued to edit our evaluation. We progressed from the work that I did on the first question so we started to focus on the second question which was based on our target audience.
I added a couple voice overs to the clips that we had, and dragged clips form our old drafts and added them in, extracting audio's and matching the sound up with the images.
Tobore & Victoria then made another stop-start animation which showed our statistics. We did this to use in our evaluation to show the comparison between real media products and our own work. We then added this chart to our actual documentary as the typing part in the beginning was too long.

Brushing up on things
Today is our deadline for our documentary. The group got together and fixed the voiceovers and we made a couple last minute additions, as Tobore added the statistics and I did the voiceover.
Overall, as a group we have come together to get this done on time and completed to the best of our ability and that I believe is what we have all done.
Evaluation: Our evaluation is almost done, as we used our target audience clips from our first draft. However the feedback we got from this was that we needed to get feedback from our current draft. Because our target audience feedback was mainly from our first draft.
Victoria and I filmed this today as a last minute correction to our evaluation.

Evaluation Putting it together
Today Victoria and Mariana worked on the evaluation, as I was away and Tobore worked on the stop- start animation. So now we just have to address the last two questions of the evaluation that are related to our ancillaries, these cannot be answered until we finished our ancillary tasks.

Working on the Evaluation
- Today I edited some of the evaluation, what I did was I started on the first question which was.
- In ways did your media product use develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products.
- What I did was I drew a chart and noted all the things that we used developed and challenged. Then from this I chose the two most important conventions that I believed we used effectively in our documentary e.g. Using visuals with co-ordinating images.
- To help me with my evaluation what I did was I used the excess clips from our 5th draft of our documentary, extracted the audio's and split the clips to match the voice overs.
- So I then followed this structure for the first question of the Evaluation, and intend to continue this structure of using voice overs with images from real media products and our own documentary.
- From our feedback of our first draft of the evaluation, this is what we were advised to do.

4th Draft of our Documentary
The feedback we got from this draft was that:
Overall we have shown some development in our documentary, with the co-ordinating visuals and the matched voiceoevers which was something the teacher complimented us on.
EBI- Even Better If:
- The introduction needs to be added- the ethograpgy part it needs to be better. (The beginning part where there is writing typed up on the screen.)
- The building that was used as a visual for the Latin words, it was difficult to understand that it was related to Latin words. We were told to find another visual which would be better, as this might be confusing for our target audience.
- The logo for our documentary is too plain (We need to devise another one more creative)
- The ending needs co-ordinating visuals and examples to be shown as either footage or visual images e.g. a picture/still image to support the point being made.

Converting a youtube clip to iMovie.
This same concept applies as before but only a different website is used. Using these sites helped us to get the videos and music we wanted. Although we had to be careful as in our productions we are advised to use a limited amount of copyrighted music and clips.

Public Interviews outside the British Library
- Today I filmed outside the British Library, as the main focus on our documentary was about Language Change. I booked myself into an Exhibition at the British Library to gain more knowledge about the formation of the English language and how it came about. Luckily what we have in our documentary was equivalent to the information that I needed to find out meaning not that much change additions to be made to our script.
- I then decided to take advantage of this opportunity and I filmed Interviews of people that had just come our from the Exhibition.
- Finding participants was slightly difficult. Although when I managed to find a group of teenagers that were related to our target audience initially they had all agreed to be filmed. But once I had started taking out my equipment some of them took off!
- So I was left with one girl who agreed to stay and do the interview.! =) (Thankfully)
- A Barrier to this: Filming in the heart of Euston (LONDON) was a challenge as many people were on their way to work or was to busy to talk, meaning that I had to settle with the one interviewee I interviewed that Day. (Just my luck.)

Research on Music
As our third draft for our documentary is due on the 23rd of February. In our group we got feedback from our teacher and what she thought needs to be improved is:
- The type of music we used- throughout the whole documentary we used the same song and this is what Ms thought needs to be better.
- The interviews- As we filmed our interview in school what we were advised to do was to film it in a different location as the interview looks really staged.
- http://www.videoforums.co.uk/pimp-link/9556-free-sound-effects-music.html
2. This is the one that we think we might use in our documentary.

Editing our Evaluation
Whilst doing our documentary I decided to keep on top of editing our second draft of our Evaluation. I spent at least two hours re-filming certain parts ( The tutorials part) Importing clips and trying to achieve match on action with the different shots that was filmed.

Filming the public Interviews
- The initial plan today was to film in Shepard's Bush but due to the time Victoria and I decided to film it was quite dark.
- Today we filmed at least six people, as I was the presenter I asked the questions, and I also went out to find people that fitted with our target audience and asked them if they were available. This was very hard as many people didn't want to be filmed.
- Choosing the location: I choose a spot where there was a direct headline that shone from a pillar. I did this as I had in mind the composition and how the shot will look on the iMac, and I did this to prevent having to film the public interviews again as this was one of our mistakes that we did not take into consideration when filming our first draft.

3rd draft of our documentary
This is the third draft of our documentary.
Feedback-
- The indent was too long and it did not get straight to the point of what the documentary is going to be about
- The typing part still needs more shots, or to be changed overall.
- But overall good improvements from the 1st and 2nd draft.

Re-filming the Presenter's part
- Today the whole group got together and refilmed the presenter part (my part.) We filmed the whole entire script in the school Library, we did this as what Tobore noticed while editing was that the my voice sounded different to the voiceover as you could tell that I was in a different location. So to prevent this what we did was we filmed me saying the whole script in one location and then extracted the audio clips and placed them where needed.
- We also took into consideration our feedback from our first draft- so we used different shots, as opposed to having a mid-shot all the way through the introduction.

2nd draft of our documentary
This is our second draft of our documentary.
- The concept of the documentary is good.
- The message the presenter was giving was also very effective as it comes across as educational
- Statistics was used in the right way
- More shots could be used
- There could be more interviews

Evaluation, And Production
In today's media lesson Victoria and Myself worked on the Evaluation. We did a little filming on our target audience.
- Saying how and where we attracted our target audience.
- How and why is our chosen channel of distribution relates to our potential target audience.
- How we chose our channel of distribution.

Our Script for our new idea
This is the first draft of our script for our new idea. The problem with this script is that the alignment is incorrect which makes it difficult to tell if something is supposed to be a voiceover or not.

Public Interviews
- On saturday the 6/2/11 Victoria and I set out to film in Westfeilds, and conduct our public interviews.
- As we filmed quite late during the evening what we did instead was we found a pilar that had a light above it and we filmed in the spot. I choose to film in this spot as I felt that it was a better composition than what we had in our first draft. What we improved: This time we kept a constant shot each time we filmed a participant.
- Addressing our Target Audience: When we set out to film our public Interviews I did was I seleceted people from the crowd that I thought fitted with our target audience which is 16+

4th Draft of script
For the new year we have a lot of re filming and catching up to do.! So The first thing I have started with is the script.
1 EXT. CONVENT OF JESUS AND MARY. DAY. 1
JAMILLA
Hello and welcome to JMTV documentaries, my name is Jamilla Joseph and today’s documentary will focus on the national use of SLANG.
Today’s episode will focus on the use of informal language used in the classrooms. Slang has always been used in the English language but most people see slang as abbreviations. E.g. Computerà PC. Now slang has evolved into a whole new era and it’s now popularly used amongst teenagers.
In this series we will be looking at culture slang in age groups, slang and the influence of technology, censorship and slang in the future. In this episode our main focus is slang in education. (VOICEOVER)
In English there are prescriptivist and descriptivist approaches to language change a prescriptivist person believes that English language should stay the same and that it should not change. Whereas a descriptivist person would embrace language change, so theoretically speaking they would embrace the evolution of slang.
When talking slang there are many theorists and people that have conducted research about the use of slang amongst teenagers. Linguist Sue Fox conducted a study in London looking at the type of language used in ethnic minorities. She called this the multi-ethnic youth dialect (MEYD) From this she found that many of the words that youths were using came from Jamaican and Indian cultures. This influence of this was due to the wide spread of ethnic groups that have settled in London.
So could this e the reason for some of the words we use today. We’ll we will take a look into the other influences of words but for now let’s take a look at the influences it has in schools.
